Remote jobs in Canada: how to find and land one
By Postulio teamPublished 4 min read
In short
In Canada, 11.4% of employed people worked exclusively from home in May 2026, and 9.8% had a hybrid arrangement. To land a remote job, read the posting’s conditions closely, set alerts by work mode, show your autonomy on your resume and be wary of online task offers that ask you to pay first.
How many Canadians work remotely?
Remote work is still a minority of jobs, which makes remote positions highly sought after. According to the Labour Force Survey for May 2026 (opens in a new tab), 11.4% of employed Canadians worked exclusively from home, and about 1 in 10 workers (9.8%) had a hybrid arrangement. This guide helps you read these postings, find them and stand out, with a list of questions to ask before you accept.
In practice, a fully remote posting draws applications from across a province, sometimes from across the country. Your application therefore needs to be even more targeted than for an on-site job: the same keywords as the posting, measurable results and proof that you work well remotely.
Remote, hybrid, work from home: how do you read a posting?
Wording varies from one posting to the next, and the real conditions are often in the details. Look out for these phrases:
| Wording in the posting | What it usually means | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Fully remote, 100% remote | No required office days | Occasional in-person meetings, travel |
| Hybrid | Part of the week at the office | Number of on-site days and flexibility |
| Remote, Canada | You can live anywhere in Canada | Excluded provinces, required time zone |
| Remote, Ontario (or another province) | You must live in that province | Reason: payroll, employment law, clients |
| Remote work possible | The job is mainly on site | After how many months, how often |
Before you accept an offer, ask these five questions:
- How many days a month will I need to be on site, and where?
- In which time zone and at what hours do I need to be available?
- Which province do I need to live in?
- What equipment does the employer provide, and does it reimburse any costs?
- Is remote work set out in a contract or written agreement?
Where should you look for remote jobs?
Use the same sources as for any job, but with a work mode filter where the site offers one, and keywords such as "remote", "work from home", "hybrid" or "télétravail". Create a separate alert for remote jobs: our guide to job alerts explains how to set it up.
Postulio’s job alerts let you filter by work mode and save an alert dedicated to remote work. Also check the career pages of employers that already hire remotely in your field: the remote work details there are often more precise than on job aggregators.
How do you tailor your resume for a remote job?
A recruiter hiring remotely mainly wonders whether you can work independently, communicate in writing and deliver without direct supervision. Answer with facts.
| Before | After |
|---|---|
| Independent and organized | Managed 40 client files fully remotely for two years, meeting 98% of deadlines |
| Good communication skills | Wrote weekly reports for a team split between Toronto and Halifax |
| Proficient with computer tools | Ran remote meetings and tracked projects in a shared tool |
Include your province of residence in your contact details, and state your availability by time zone if the posting asks for it. Reuse the posting’s exact terms: our guide to tailoring your resume to each posting explains the method.
Which traps should you avoid with remote offers?
Fake remote job offers are common. The Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre (opens in a new tab) (French page modified December 12, 2025) describes "freelance jobs" that involve "promoting" products, apps or videos: after a small payment, you are asked to pay to "upgrade to a higher level", and the earnings shown in cryptocurrency cannot be withdrawn.
Warning signs noted by the Centre:
- a job offer you did not apply for;
- tasks that require deposits up front;
- a visible balance you cannot withdraw;
- high pay for little work;
- a request to recruit other people.
A real employer never makes you pay to work. Our guide to fake job postings explains how to check an employer and report fraud.
What rights and expenses apply to remote work?
In Quebec, the CNESST states that an employer who wants to inspect a telework location in a home (opens in a new tab) (in French) must obtain your consent, and that you have the right to refuse access to your home. You must still meet your occupational health and safety obligations. Inspection arrangements can be agreed in advance in a contract, a policy or a telework agreement.
For taxes, the Canada Revenue Agency lets you deduct some home workspace expenses (opens in a new tab) under the detailed method, subject to conditions. Among other things, your employer must require you to work from home, you must have worked from home more than 50% of the time for at least four consecutive weeks, and you need Form T2200 signed by your employer (page modified January 20, 2026). Expenses reimbursed by your employer are not deductible.
These rules change: check them with the CNESST, your province’s employment standards and the Canada Revenue Agency.
